I have been an expat a long time and Gillian reminded me I used to ‘blog’ years ago when it was called writing a letter.
Delving in my archives, sure enough I found a bunch of drivel, penned over 10 years ago when I was based in Sfax in Tunisia.
This was my second time living in Tunisia, so the culture shock was missing, but I was still often amazed by life in this strange desert country. So, in the interests of lazy journalism, I offer the abridged musings of a younger me from the outskirts of Sfax. For context, I was working for BG, based in their accommodation facility with the deceptive name of Guebiba Village. A kind of downmarket version of Stepford Wives.
It had a gym, squash courts, football pitch and a Club House’ with a kind of bar, a very good chef and very few clients. Usually just the hard core of long term BG’ers who had been in Tunisia for many many years. It was ok but had seen better days.
Anyway, I call them my Sfaxian Tales. Enjoy.
